Selection and Appointment of Trainees:Student trainees for the Molecular Biophysics Training Grant will be selected by the Steering Committee from the eligible students nominated by the participating faculty. Each student will submit an application describing their background and research proposal. Students will typically be selected after their first year of graduate studies. Students will be selected on the basis of their qualifications and on their commitment to molecular biophysics. Each will be required to fulfill the criteria that we feel are essential for developing a strong, broadly based focus in molecular biophysics. At this point students will have decided on their research project but will have ample time to complete the additional course requirements that joining this program may require. The Steering Committee will meet with each student to evaluate and guide their curriculum to make certain that they comply with our requirements. The Steering Committee will also evaluate each student's progress annually on the basis of a written report from the student and a written evaluation from their advisor. Students will be supported for up to three years. If funding is terminated before the completion of their degree, the students will be encouraged to continue participating actively in the activities of the training program. Research Students nominated for this training program must be engaged in molecular biophysics research or must have identified a dissertation topic in the general area of molecular biophysics under a participating faculty member. The nomination of the student must be endorsed by the faculty member in whose laboratory the research training will be conducted. In selecting the trainees, the Steering Committee will also try to have broad representation from the various disciplines and participating departments. Coursework Each student must complete a set of core courses defined by the Steering Committee. We feel it is important for our trainees to have breadth in their exposure to biophysics. The Steering Committee will work with each student to make certain they fulfill the requirements. Scientific Ethics Although all graduate students at UCSD are encouraged to take a 1 unit course on scientific ethics, the NIH requires all students supported on the training grant to do so. Currently, UCSD offers two courses in the spring which satisfy this requirement: Biomed Sci 219 (taught by Professor Palmer Taylor) and SOM 226 / PEDS 226 (taught by Professor Michael Kalichman). Funding The budget anticipates that students will be funded for one to three years. Funding is renewable on a yearly basis up to 3 years, after the Steering Committee, in consultation with the participating faculty, have carefully evaluated the training progress of the trainee. Each trainee must submit a written summary of their progress each year. Funding beyond a three year period is, in general, derived from the research grant of the faculty member. Exceptional cases may arise. Careful consideration to such cases is be given by the Steering Committee in consultation with the participating faculty member.
